Biographies and family trees of five medieval members of the Willoughby family have been added to the Nottingham University online Family & Estate Resource relating to the Middleton family of Wollaton Hall.

The Willoughby family is descended from Ralph Bugge, a Nottingham merchant, who bought lands in Willoughby-on-the-Wolds, Nottinghamshire, in the thirteenth century. The family soon changed their name to the name of the village in which they settled. Sir Hugh Willoughby was the last of the family to be buried in Willoughby church, in 1448. By this time the family had acquired important estates at Wollaton in Nottinghamshire and Middleton in Warwickshire. The original family holding at Willougby-on-the-Wolds was sold in the early 17th century.

The Middleton Collection contains over 400 medieval deeds relating to Willoughby-on-the-Wolds, dating back to around 1180, plus 16th and 17th-century manor court rolls and rentals.
